Flaming hell! It was far too hot for croquet

There was high drama as Caversham’s match against Dogmersfield this afternoon was abandoned when the players agreed it was too hot to continue.

Caversham C’s pairing of Pam Briggs and Jane Probitts were trailing 6-4 in the doubles when they called a halt.

The match had started shortly before midday and the temperature at the Albert Road lawn had quickly ramped up to 31 Celcius.

Originally our ladies and the gents from their Hampshire visitors took a water break with the score at 5-3.

It was then that Dogmersfield skipper Richard Calvert suggested a possible abandonment after the completion of what was becoming an attritional doubles on the baked playing surface, meaning the cancellation of the four singles.

The match restarted briefly but two hoops later it was agreed that the heatwave had won.

The clubs have decided that the match will be replayed on September 6th. Meanwhile the sorry scorecard (below) tells its own story…
