Oh! Carol… still a big hit 60 years later

Carol Jamieson was the hero as Caversham maintained their unbeaten record in the AC Handicap North League at Eynsham on Saturday.

After 2-2 draws at both Oxford University and Phyllis Court our team were hoping to go one better against the combined Eynsham-Harwell side.

Wins for both Charles Briggs (26-2) and Brian Jamieson (26-16) put us in control but Mike Kay went down 26-16 to leave the rubber on a knife edge.

With one game left on the lawn it made for an exciting finish, with all the other players and officials watching.

Fortunately Carol stepped up and made two long hit-ins to eliminate a threat from her opponent around his next hoop, from where he would have had a good chance of running three more hoops and thus winning the game and drawing the match.

Carol eventually prevailed 20-18 to bring home the points for a 3-1 triumph.

  • Sadly, no pictures from Eynsham but we’ve got the great Neil Sedaka!
