Hobby craft secures One-Ball title after a thriller

Gareth Hobby took the honours in the Caversham heat of the Charity One-Ball Championship on Saturday.

After winning all five of his round-robin handicap matches, Gareth pipped Carol Jamieson 13-12 in a thrilling final.

While Gareth proved all-conquering in Group A, Carol narrowly pipped Charles Briggs and Anne Small to first place in Group B.

The level-play final was always close, with Gareth enjoying a slender lead throughout, but he had to hold off a determined fightback by his more experienced opponent.

Most of those eliminated in the round-robin stayed on to support their club colleagues (pictured right) in the final after what was considered a highly successful event.

Round-robin scores: GROUP A: Gareth Hobby 5 wins, Brian Jamieson 3, Pam Briggs 3, Liz Walker 2, Stella Kendall 1, Mike Reddy 1. GROUP B: Carol Jamieson 4 wins, Charles Briggs 4, Anne Small 3, Judy Reddy 2, Jasmine Marsh 1, John Wakeford 1.

Gareth now goes through to represent our club in the national final of the competition — supporting the mental health charity MIND — in Surbiton on May 8th.

Thanks to all members who played and helped raise £65 for MIND.
